Deputy Angel Reinosa, 21, is lucky to be alive after his bulletproof vest deflected the bullet from his chest to his shoulder when the gunman opened fire around 2.45pm. He suffered a ‘very minor’ wound.
Two shots rang out from a four-story apartment building that houses the mentally ill located just a block from the sheriff’s station, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Todd Weber said.

Angel Reinosa was on training status and was a relatively new deputy who is only 21-years-old, said Wegener.
The deputy has indicated that he fabricated the whole thing. So there was no crime. There were no shots fired, Wegener said.
Reinosa was treated for what authorities termed a grazing gunshot wound at the time because that’s what he reported.
The wound did not penetrate his skin. It was a contusion, a bruise, said Wegener, who added, We cleared the whole apartment complex.

He claimed to have been struck by a bullet while walking to his car in the police parking lot, and said a sniper in a four-story apartment complex nearby had shot him.
This led to a SWAT team searching every room in the building and the surrounding area, which concluded at around 5.30am Thursday.

At a press conference on Saturday, Homicide Bureau Captain Kent Wegener said the deputy had cut holes in his T-shirt with a knife to make it look like a wound.
There was no sniper, no shots fired and no gunshot injuries sustained to his shoulder. Completely fabricated.’
