ORIGINAL STORY:

An active shooter investigation has drawn a heavy police presence in Branford, Connecticut, on Tuesday afternoon.

8 News reports that SWAT negotiators are at the scene near the intersection of Main Street and Cherry Hill Road, where a suspected gunman has reportedly opened fire inside a hair salon, and possibly at additional locations.

Authorities are reportedly trying to make contact with the suspected gunman.

According to the report, some residents have been evacuated from the area.

While the report indicates that the suspect fired at police officers, it is unclear if anyone has been injured.

At 1 p.m. Branford Police Department reported on Facebook, “…dealing with a barricaded person with shots fired in the area of Main Street near Cherry Hill Road. Please avoid this area, the scene is not safe. Several police agencies are assisting and the South Central Regional SWAT Team is arriving.”

At about 2:15 p.m. a recently evacuated resident near the scene heard police calling for the barricaded man to come out/come down from where he is barricaded on a second floor at 241 Main Street, about two blocks west of where this photo was taken at one of several police barricades which have shut down the area. Customers were also sheltering inside businesses in Richlin plaza.

Police are also asking those in the area not to live stream any police activity on social media, for the safety of officers and others.

A stretch of Main Street is closed, as is the I-95 ramp at Exit 53, and Branford police warned the scene remained unsafe at about 2:45 p.m. — hours after the incident began.

State Sen. Christine Cohen said her office received reports of an active shooter in the area of 241 Main St. and State Rep. Robin Comey said nearby residents were being evacuated from the area.

“Praying for everyone’s safety,” Cohen tweeted at 1:24 p.m.

🚨My office has received reports of an active shooter in Branford. Police are on the scene in the area of 241 Main Street. Please stay clear of that area. Our law enforcement officers are actively working to deescalate and apprehend the individual. Praying for everyone’s safety.

Steve Milano, manager of Richlin Home and Auto across the street from 241 Main St., said he heard the first burst of gunfire about 11:50 a.m. As of 2:20 p.m., he estimated 200-300 rounds had been fired, he said.

The person was “firing indiscriminately” some 85 feet away with automatic weapons, he said, and when police showed up, the shooter fired at them. He didn’t know whether anyone was injured, although he heard a report on a police scanner that one person had been taken to the hospital.

“It’s crazy, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Milano said.

Branford police say that several police agencies, including the Connecticut State Police, are assisting and the South Central Regional SWAT Team has arrived. They have evacuated some residents in the area.
